Plum Season

Blaisdons were once used extensively in the jam industry. They are still popular in Gloucestershire for jam, culinary and other uses. There are about 16 heritage Gloucestershire varieties of plum and damson, some very rare. Thankfully, most are now safe and are available from local nurseries http://gloucestershireorchardtrust.org. ... nurseries/
You can download Charles Martell's Native Plums of Gloucestershire book http://gloucestershireorchardtrust.org. ... ies/plums/).

Three Counties Traditional Orchard Project (TCTOP) Update

From Karen Humphries - Development Officer
I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Development Officer for TCTOP. I started work in June 2013 and have been meeting orchard groups and enthusiasts from all over the three counties to find out about their work and let them know about the project.

TCTOP is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and covers Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. A wide range of partners are involved but the Malvern Hills AONB Unit is taking the lead role and I'm working in their office to help with the first phase. We're currently in a development year, which we're using to help 'shape' the project before making a final 'bid' to the Lottery. If we're successful we'll get funding for a three year Three Counties Traditional Orchards Project, which is all about conserving traditional orchards; for people and for wildlife.

This will be a really exciting project. We're hoping not only to renovate and improve orchards but also to make sure that enough people have the right knowledge and skills to care for them and to ensure that this expertise is passed on to others. We hope to do this by getting more people involved in managing and using traditional orchards, so we're using volunteers; matching up orchard owners with local people and groups who can help to renovate them. They'll be supported by an orchard knowledge and skills 'hub' – one in each County – helping to raise awareness, provide advice and help deliver training. The Gloucestershire Orchard Trust (GOT) will act as the Gloucestershire 'hub' and be the main point of contact for our Gloucestershire orchard enthusiasts. We've already been contacted by many people who are keen to get involved.

Our plan is to eventually focus the project on two areas in each County. We're currently looking at data about orchard fauna and flora, orchard densities and condition to make sure we are choosing areas where orchards most need attention. We're also attempting to match these up with orchard owners needing help and with likely sources of volunteers. We're aware that some fantastic work is already going on in Gloucestershire so we're very keen not to step on toes or re-invent wheels - there's a lot of talking to do to make sure we are working together! Local knowledge is invaluable at this stage and we're looking forward to working closely with GOT members. A tour of both the Hartpury Perry Pear Centre and Days Cottage/GOT Orchard & Rural Skills Centre in Brookthorpe and some cider and perry sampling in the sunshine have already left me feeling very optimistic about GOT's involvement!

If you would like to know more about TCTOP please contact Karen on:
01684 560616 or khumphries@worcestershire.gov.uk
Footnote: other key players will be Colwall Orchard Group (Herefordshire) and Vale Landscape Heritage Trust (Worcestershire) with Marcher Apple Network also very much involved and others.
