GOT Annual General Meeting Saturday 29 April 2017

Postby Ann Smith » Mon Apr 24, 2017 3:43 pm

Venue: The Anchor Inn, Epney/Framilode (10am-1pm), lunch there, followed by a walkabout (approx. 2 or 2.30-4pm) at Longney Orchards.
The function room upstairs for meetings has a superb river view. Plenty of parking. Attendees to place food orders on arrival. For pub details and map

Guest speaker John Iles, Founder and a Director of the Wyre Community Land Trust will be talking to us on 'The orchards of the Wyre Forest; a new chapter'.
From John: “with Heritage Lottery Fund money and Higher Level Stewardship, we have restored many orchards which need careful maintenance to come to maturity and production. The HLF scheme is now over and we will have HLS schemes coming to an end over the next few years with uncertainty as to what will come next. Many of the sites are SSSI so will be protected. We have helped set up a commercial juicing business on a farm in the area and so many of us are now using that service to juice our fruit. ”

Charge: Free for GOT members (and their household) and £2 for non members (waived if you join on the night).

10am-10.30am welcome, networking, browse books for sale (please note due to limited space, we will not have our usual library/literature or displays).
Please order your lunch from the staff downstairs if you are staying as early as possible and buy coffee/drink yourself if you wish.

10.30am-11.30am GOT Business - including Chairman's report, Treasurer's report, Election of Officers (chairman, vice chairman and treasurer), AOB/Question time.

Charles Martell will give his usual brief Varietal Research update on Gloucestershire fruit
varieties. Chris Wedge, “our” orchard advisor from Natural England may be available if anyone has any questions about the new Countryside Stewardship scheme.

11.30am-12.30pm John Iles on 'The orchards of the Wyre Forest; a new chapter'.

1pm Lunch at the Anchor Inn

2pm/2.30pm-4pm (approx.) drive in own cars to GOT's 18 acres of Longney Orchards by the River Severn for informal walk around. Come and see what has been achieved so far, enjoy the wonderful habitat and learn about our plans. Feel free to stay on and have a picnic. Please note, there is no vehicular access but there are public footpaths. At the AGM, we will give directions and final parking arrangements. There are no toilets at the orchards except a simple portaloo under a tarpaulin and ground is uneven. Please take care around the trees and under branches. Brambles and nettles. The River Severn and rhine/ditch are fenced off.

We look forward to seeing you!
